Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday paid tribute to the millions who endured violence, displacement, and loss during the Partition of India, as the nation marked Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

Goyal, in a post on X, reflected on the anguish of August 14, 1947, when countless people were uprooted from their homes. “On this day in the year 1947, people had to endure the pain of violence, displacement, and the loss of loved ones due to the partition. #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay will continue to pay tribute to all those who sacrificed while making future generations aware of the unbearable suffering of the displaced,” he wrote.

Jaishankar described the Partition as a tragedy with “far-reaching human and strategic consequences,” honouring the resilience of those who lived through it. “There are many lessons to be learnt from this painful chapter,” he noted.

Earlier in the day, Union Health Minister and BJP President JP Nadda urged citizens to unite against “anti-national forces,” calling the Partition a “dark day” in history when people suffered “merciless pain” and lost their homes, property, and lives. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in institutionalising the observance of this day to preserve the nation’s historical memory.

Observed annually on August 14, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day honours the victims and survivors of one of the largest human migrations in history, when nearly 20 million people were displaced during India’s independence and partition in 1947.
